Career in polar research

Indian Polar Research Network (IPRN) recently organized a career panel discussion themed on 'Opportunities in Ocean Acidification Research' in the International Workshop on Ocean Acidification organized by Laboratory of Integrative Taxonomy and Microbial Ecology (LITME), Indian Institute of Science Education and Research-Kolkata (IISER-K).

The discussion was started by
Punyasloke Bhadury, Assistant Professor at IISER-K and Head, LITME who introducedIPRN to the participants and urged the panel members to share their views on opportunities in polar research for young scientists.

The panel comprised of leading marine scientists from countries like Norway, UK, Australia and Hong Kong.

They stressed on the need of effective scientific communication and active collaborations for career development of young researchers.

They also highlighted the critical issues that affect the polar ecosystems and role of upcoming scientists in solving them.

The discussion was followed by an interaction between the speakers and the participantswhich emphasized more on scientific communication, good publications and building a good CV for excellence in science.

The two days “International Workshop on Ocean Acidification: Consequences for marine ecosystems”also reflectedon the gradual changein ocean pH due to increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide which has a negative impact on shell-building marine animals.

IPRN, a group of young Indian researchers involved in polar research, aims to create awareness towards polar science amongst young researchers and general public.
